Job Opening: Wholesale Purchasing and Sales Manager

Position Description

Experienced produce industry to lead wholesale buying and sales, including the sale and planning of crop production for 75 acre organic farm. The position will coordinate purchase, aggregation and sale of produce from other farms in the area to meet the demand from institutional, retail, and restaurant buyers. The position will lead a small purchasing and sales team to increase the company’s top line revenue and volume while at the same time decreasing the cost of goods. The position will be responsible for wholesale pricing and maintaining  margins.

Food Commons Fresno is the first prototype of a national model, that is structured to retain ownership, profits and governance of a vertically integrated food business within the local community. Once the model is refined and successful, other businesses will be launched within California. The business has been in existence since 2014 and operating since May 2015. The company is committed to working with small farmers, ranchers and producers of dairy products within the region. Food Commons Fresno has a goal of sourcing products within a 200 mile radius, aligning purchases with the California seasonality and supporting farmers and ranchers that use regenerative practices.


The ideal candidate will have at least ten years experience in the produce industry, as both a buyer and seller. The candidate will also have contacts within the produce industry that have potential to become new customers of the company. This position reports to the General Manager of the Company


Position Responsibilities

  1. Maintaining and expanding relationships with wholesale, retail and institutional buyers

  2. Maintaining and expanding relationships with small to mid-sized farmer, ranchers and processor

  3. Crop planning with Food Commons Farm Manager and other farm suppliers

  4. Leading, Managing and Mentoring the wholesale purchase and sales team

  5. Working with the Fresno Operations Manager to introduce new items and evaluate performance of existing items

  6. Establishing pricing and margins for all wholesale items

  7. Forecasting financial performance and creating budgets

  8. Reporting and monitoring of wholesale revenues, margins and profits including farm produce

  9. Performance evaluation and goal setting for the wholesale buying and sales team

Position Requirements

  1. Minimum 10 years produce purchasing and sales experience

  2. Minimum 3 years management experience

  3. Experience in crop or farm planning

  4. Experience with ecommerce platforms such as Local Orbit

  5. Proven record of performance and meeting goals

  6. B.A. or B.S. in Agribusiness, Economics or Accounting

  7. Experience and familiarity with accounting and financial reporting software

  8. Ability to speak and read Spanish

  9. Work experience in the Central Valley


Position Compensation

Salary and other benefits negotiable depending on experience and qualifications.
